How to pick your wedding photographer

How To Pick Your Wedding Photographer

Finding your wedding photographer is a question of synergy. It might sound crazy, but the process of finding your perfect wedding photographer can be more about if they make you feel comfortable, or not, than anything else.  Certain people are more particular about certain things than others are, and you need to find a wedding photographer who is able to capture and bring creative memories to what matters most to you.

This person will be with you throughout your special wedding day, and so you want to make sure you are 100% happy, comfortable and able to breathe easy on the day. You’ll probably already be feeling a little nervous, which is normal and you need to find a wedding photographer who will get it, and make sure your day is memorable not only with their skills but also through their creative process.

In this blog, I’d love to share some of my top tips for finding your perfect wedding photographer. It doesn’t have to be complicated, it can be simple, easy and based on you and your partner’s gut feel for the day.

Know Your Desired Style And Book Your Venue

You will want to make sure you have some clarity when it comes to the style you’re aiming for on your wedding day. Some photographers take more documentary-style images, some are more rustic in their approach and others aim for a more traditional approach in their photography style. There is no right or wrong style but as the bride or groom, you want to make sure that you pick someone who understands your desired look, feel and wedding style. Booking your venue is also a very helpful step in this process, you’ll easily be able to visualise your ideal photography style based on the set up of your chosen (and booked) venue,

Take Your Time And Do Some Networking

Often the best connections are through the people we know and love. Ask friends and family for wedding photographer recommendations, and see if you can find someone who will fit your picture. It also doesn’t hurt to do a bit of your own research and find the photographers who are listed on some of the top wedding recommendation directories. When wedding photographers are part of a network, they are more often than not more credible, trustworthy and ultimately great at what they do.

There is also no hurry, you will find the right person in perfect timing!

Don’t Be Scared To Ask Questions

Finding and committing to your wedding photographer means that there are a few things you need to make sure you’re aware of and comfortable with. My advice would be to write down a list of your concerns, questions and ideas for your wedding day, bounce them off a potential photographer and see how they respond. A good wedding photographer will understand that you are investing a lot of money and trust into their service and would be more than happy to be honest, open and professional when managing your questions. It’s also better to get clarity than to leave a bunch of question marks in your head on the day.

Ask About Their Creative Process

Weddings are emotional, and incredibly intimate no matter how big or small they are. Families will be in tears, brides will be radiant and glowing and all the men will be holding it together behind their suits and ties (or loose linen shirts!). This is why a wedding photographer’s creative process and intuition on the day is so important. Nobody knows your guests, family, partner and bridal party like you do. This means that your wedding photographer needs to help to make everyone feel fun, comfortable and confident in every shot.

Ask potential photographers about their creative process. You could ask questions like how do you store the photos you take? What is your editing and saving process like? Which elements of a wedding day do you generally focus on when taking photographs? These types of questions and more, will give you peace of mind on the day knowing you are in the safest possible hands.
